The program includes classroom instruction, private lessons, and group participation. The curriculum consists of courses in music theory, ear training and sight singing, music history, hymnology, conducting, congregational songleading, and primary and secondary performance proficiency.
The mission of the Music Department at IBC is to equip students to glorify God by serving in a local church in teaching, performing, writing, and arranging music and administrating music programs.
Students enrolled in the Church Music program will:
- have an understanding and appreciation of the historical background of the Western culture of music,
- have an understanding and appreciation of the historical background of the international body of Protestant hymnody,
- have a working knowledge in the historical “common practice” period of music theory (from the late Baroque through the late Romantic periods), and an acquaintance with early music practice and twentieth century techniques, and
- have the ability to perform proficiently on one or more instruments.
